Understanding the New MMCEU Limits in Mississippi: What Patients Need to Know
Starting July 1, 2025, a major change takes effect in how Mississippi measures and limits medical cannabis. If you’re a patient who relies on edibles or concentrates, this update could affect how much you can purchase—and how you shop. Let’s break it down.
What Is A MMCEU?
MMCEU stands for the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Unit. It’s the metric the state uses to limit how much medical cannabis patients can purchase. Think of it as a standardized “unit” that applies across different product types:
-
Flower (dried buds)
-
Concentrates (like wax, cartridges, extracts)
-
Infused products (including edibles and beverages)
Mississippi Medical Marijuana Patients are allowed 24 MMCEU’s in a rolling 30 day period. For more information, check out our blog post at https://www.greenwaycert.com/mmceus/.
The Old MMCEU Rules (Before July 1, 2025)
Previously, one MMCEU equaled:
-
3.5 grams of flower (such as dried flower or pre-rolls)
-
1 gram of concentrate—by weight (regardless of THC potency)
-
100 mg of THC in infused products (edibles, beverages)
The New MMCEU Rules (Effective July 1, 2025)
Starting July 1, 2025, the definition of MMCEU shifts to focus on actual THC content:
-
Still 3.5 grams of flower → unchanged
-
Now 1 gram of THC in concentrates (instead of 1 gram total weight)
-
Now 1 gram of THC in infused products (previously 100 mg)
What This Means for Patients
These updates allow patients to purchase more THC in the same number of MMCEUs—especially useful if you favor edibles or potent concentrates.
Example 1:
Previously, a 500 mg THC chocolate bar equaled 5 MMCEUs (since 100 mg per MMCEU). Now it counts as 0.5 MMCEU, giving you much more flexibility in your allotment.
Example 2:
A 1-gram vape cartridge with 800 mg of THC used to count as 1 MMCEU (by weight), but now it counts as 0.8 MMCEU, because it’s based on THC content.
This change benefits patients who prefer stronger products or need higher THC levels for symptom relief—making your supply last longer without breaking compliance limits.
Important Notes for Dispensaries and Patients
Dispensaries must comply with updated tracking systems (like METRC) to ensure accurate inventory management and MMCEU deductions at checkout. Failure to update records could result in compliance issues or incorrect allotments.
